Rising to prominence in the late 1950s with energetic, vibrant sculptures hewn from disused car parts, his twisted, lacquered, partially painted, metal sculptures, a three-dimensional form of Abstract Expressionism, astounded critics and captured the imagination of fellow artists. In the mid-1960s the artist abandoned automotive metal and turned to other materials. His experimentation in two-dimensional work forms different creative phases, time and time again bringing him back to the abstract expressionism starting point. His returns to 2-dimensional work suggests other directions he might have taken–and quietly did take, in sketching, painting and printmaking–reinforcing both the pictorial character of his work and his unconventional way with materials. Always returning to metal as his primary material, and in his later years, limited himself to specific parts of the automobile, adding color to found car parts, dripping, spraying and patterning on top of existing hues to an often wild effect, Chamberlain was a ground-breaking artist who pioneered three-dimensional Abstract Expressionism. - [Arturo Herrera](https://galeriemax.com/artist/arturo-herrera) - Arturo Herrera's collages feature open-ended landscapes with cartoon characters and news clippings. His impact as an artist is far deeper and greater than his one prescient observation that “everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” His omnivorous curiosity resulted in an enormous body of work that spanned every available medium and most importantly contributed to the collapse of boundaries between high and low culture. A skilled (analog) social networker, Warhol parlayed his fame, one connection at a time, to the status of a globally recognized brand. Decades before widespread reliance on portable media devices, he documented his daily activities and interactions on his traveling audio tape recorder and beloved Minox 35EL camera. Predating the hyper-personal outlets now provided online, Warhol captured life’s every minute detail in all its messy, ordinary glamour and broadcast it through his work, to a wide and receptive audience. The youngest child of three, Andy was born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in the working-class neighborhood of Oakland, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stricken at an early age with a rare neurological disorder, the young Andy Warhol found solace and escape in the form of popular celebrity magazines and DC comic books, imagery he would return to years later. Predating the multiple silver wigs and deadpan demeanor of later years, Andy experimented with inventing personae during his college years. He signed greeting cards “André”, and ultimately dropped the “a” from his last name, shortly after moving to New York and following his graduation with a degree in Pictorial Design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1949. Work came quickly to Warhol in New York, a city he made his home and studio for the rest of his life. Within a year of arriving, Warhol garnered top assignments as a commercial artist for a variety of clients including Columbia Records, Glamour magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, NBC, Tiffany & Co., Vogue, and others. He also designed fetching window displays for Bonwit Teller and I. Miller department stores. After establishing himself as an acclaimed graphic artist, Warhol turned to painting and drawing in the 1950s, and in 1952 he had his first solo exhibition at the Hugo Gallery, with Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. As he matured, his paintings incorporated photo-based techniques he developed as a commercial illustrator. The Museum of Modern Art (among others) took notice, and in 1956 the institution included his work in his first group show. The turbulent 1960s ignited an impressive and wildly prolific time in Warhol’s life. It is this period, extending into the early 1970s, which saw the production of many of Warhol’s most iconic works. Building on the emerging movement of Pop Art, wherein artists used everyday consumer objects as subjects, Warhol started painting readily found, mass-produced objects, drawing on his extensive advertising background. When asked about the impulse to paint Campbell’s soup cans, Warhol replied, “I wanted to paint nothing. I was looking for something that was the essence of nothing, and that was it”. The humble soup cans would soon take their place among the Marilyn Monroes, Dollar Signs, Disasters, and Coca Cola Bottles as essential, exemplary works of contemporary art. - [KAWS](https://galeriemax.com/artist/kaws-artist) - KAWS is an American artist and designer who creates cartoonish figures permeated with Pop Art influences. After graduating from high school, Weiner had a variety of jobs—he worked on an oil tanker, on docks, and unloading railroad cars. He traveled throughout North America before returning to New York, where he exhibited at Seth Siegelaub Contemporary Art in 1964 and 1965. Weiner’s early work included experiments with systematic approaches to shaped canvases and later, featured squares cut out of carpeting or walls. A turning point in Weiner’s approach came in 1968, when he created a work for an outdoor exhibition organized by Siegelaub at Windham College in Putney, Vermont. Weiner proposed to define the space for his work with rather unobtrusive means: “A series of stakes set in the ground at regular intervals to form a rectangle with twine strung from stake to stake to demark a grid—a rectangle removed from this rectangle.” When students cut down the twine because it hampered their access across the campus lawn, Weiner realized that his piece could have been even less obtrusive: viewers could have experienced the same effect Weiner desired simply by reading a verbal description of the work. Not long after this, Weiner turned to language as the primary vehicle for his work, concluding in 1968 that: “(1) The artist may construct the piece. (2) The piece may be fabricated. (3) The piece may not be built. [Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist, the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership.]” Like other Conceptual artists who gained international recognition in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Weiner investigated forms of display and distribution that challenge traditional assumptions about the nature of the art object. As the sole contribution to a presentation organized by Siegelaub in 1968, Weiner created a small book entitled Statements; since the work consisted of nothing but words, there was no reason to display a physical object. That same year, Weiner also contributed pages to Siegelaub’s Xeroxbook, a compendium of photocopies by seven Conceptually oriented artists. The wall installations that have been a primary medium for Weiner since the 1970s consist solely of words in a nondescript lettering painted on walls. The lettering need not be done by the Weiner himself, as long as the sign painter complies with the instructions dictated by the artist. Although this body of work focuses on the potential for language to serve as an art form, the subjects of his epigrammatic statements are often materials, or a physical action or process, as exemplified by such works as ONE QUART GREEN EXTERIOR INDUSTRIAL ENAMEL THROWN ON A BRICK WALL (1968) or EARTH TO EARTH ASHES TO ASHES DUST TO DUST (1970). In others, the subject involves a translation from one language to another or an encounter with a national boundary, as in THE JOINING OF FRANCE GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND BY ROPE (1969). In the succeeding decades, Weiner explored the interaction of punctuation, shapes, and color to serve as inflections of meaning for his texts. In 1997, he created Homeport, an interactive environment for the contemporary art web site Adaweb.com, in which visitors can explore a space defined by linguistic rather than geographic features. Major solo exhibitions of the artist’s work have been mounted at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (1990), Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (1991), Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1991), Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (1991 and 1992), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992), Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1994), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1994), Museum Ludwig, Cologne (1995), Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin (2000), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (2004), and Tate Gallery in London (2006). In 2007, the Whitney Museum of American Art organized the first major retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States. In addition to publishing numerous books, Weiner has produced various films and videos, including Beached (1970), Do You Believe in Water? (1976), and Plowman’s Lunch (1982). Weiner lives and works in New York. - [Charles Gaines](https://galeriemax.com/artist/charles-gaines) - Explore the work of Charles Gaines, a pivotal figure in the field of Conceptual Art at Galerie Maximillian. - [Salvador Dalí](https://galeriemax.com/artist/salvador-dali) - Salvador Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century and the most famous Surrealist. - [Rashid Johnson](https://galeriemax.com/artist/rashid-johnson) - Rashid Johnson’s practice is defined by its critical evocations and entangling of racial and cultural identity, African American history, and mysticism. - [Etel Adnan](https://galeriemax.com/artist/etel-adnan) - Visit Galerie Maximillian to see abstract colorful works by Etel Adnan's. These seminal images are not merely visual representations of the landscapes that she observes; they are imbued with a deep emotional dialogue and an underlying political commentary that communicates profoundly with the viewer within an autobiographical context and through self-portraiture rather than the genre of landscape painting. Born in London’s East End in 1963 to a teenage mother and raised by Irish grandparents, Suzy Murphy moved to Alberta, Canada aged five. From occupying a small tenement apartment with her large Irish family to emigrating with her mother to the vast open landscapes of North America, the subsequent emotional shift of being alone was the creative catalyst for the tranquillity and magical realism that informs her work. Suzy Murphy’s love of North America has remained, and for several years has travelled extensively on road trips from the monumental landscapes of the Rocky Mountains of Western Canada to the sprawling townships and prairies of the Western United States. Her diarised sketches speak of this time and her paintings reflect it. This narrative of her life is the subconscious thread that runs throughout her work and continues to present itself in her paintings. Suzy Murphy is an alumna of St Martin’s School of Art, London in 1982. Her work has been exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions and has been the recipient of several awards including Henry Yates Thompson Art Prize in 1982, Elizabeth Greenshields Prize in 1987 and National Open Art Landscape Prize in 2016. Her work is held in many important public and private collections worldwide. This Belgian artist's surrealist works blend horror, peril, comedy, and mystery. - [George Condo](https://galeriemax.com/artist/george-condo) - With friends and colleagues Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring (not to mention Julian Schnabel and David Salle), Condo was part of a small cadre of precocious New York-based artists who were intent on restoring faith in the possibilities for a progressive, and distinctively American, figurative painting style. Through their collective endeavors, they aligned the contemporary America art scene with the international Neo-Expressionist movement that came to prominence in the 1980s. Condo has made his own reputation through his willingness to explore combinations of different artistic styles within a single canvas. In his portraits, for instance, Condo is apt to combine the ceremony of the Old Masters with a mischievous humor that often draws on the conventions of pop cartoons; his aesthetic goal being to confound his viewer by employing the pop cartoon as a device that effectively debunks the idea that connects classical art with the intellect. Condo has also described his artistic style as “psychological cubism,” explaining that “Picasso painted a violin from four different perspectives at one moment. I do the same with psychological states”. Many of his paintings recall thus the works by the likes of Willem de Kooning and Pablo Picasso and he uses this technique to explore themes relating to the macabre, the carnivalesque and the abject. In a third idiom to describe his practice, he has spoken of “visual choreography” whereby he gives visual form to music, his second great passion (after art). - [Idris Khan](https://galeriemax.com/artist/idris-khan) - London-based artist Idris Khan was born in the UK in 1978. Since completing his Master’s Degree with a Distinction in Research at the Royal College of Art in London in 2004, he has received international acclaim for his minimal, yet emotionally charged photographs, videos and sculptures and is without question one of the most exciting British artists of his generation. Drawing on diverse cultural sources including literature, history, art, music and religion, Khan has developed a unique narrative involving densely layered imagery that inhabits the space between abstraction and figuration and speaks to the themes of history, cumulative experience and the metaphysical collapse of time into single moments. Whilst Khan’s mindset is more painterly than photographic, he often employs the tools of photomechanical reproduction to create his work. Photographing or scanning from secondary source material–sheet music, pages from the Qur’an, reproductions of late Caravaggio paintings–he then builds up the layers of scans digitally, which allows him to meticulously control minute variances in contrast, brightness and opacity. The resultant images are often large-scale C-prints with surfaces that have a remarkable optical intensity. Khan’s oeuvre has expanded to include sculpture and painting. For sculptural works, using materials such as steel plates, cubes and horizontal stone slabs, Khan sandblasts the surface with templates of musical scores or prayers, continuing his investigation into the ways in which cultural, visual, cinematic and temporal memories coalesce into a dense, synesthetic whole. In 2012, Khan was commissioned by the British Museum in London to create a new wall drawing for the exhibition, Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam. In addition to the wall drawing, Khan’s stunning floor sculpture, Seven Times, was installed in the museum’s majestic Great Court. In March of the same year,The New York Times Magazine commissioned Khan to create a new body of work that was published in their London issue. In 2017, Khan was awarded the American Architecture Prize for his design of Abu Dhabi’s Wahat Al Karama. Commissioned for the United Arab Emirates in, the memorial park pays tribute to members of the UAE who lost their lives in military service was unveiled in November 2016. In 2018, Idris Khan was commissioned to create the British Museum’s first site-specific artworks as part of the new Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World. He was also commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to create the cover for their Winter Olympics issue. In this series Khan utilizes his unique approach to creating densely layered imagery that inhabits the space between abstraction and figuration, collapsing time and cumulative experience into a single moment. Khan has had solo exhibitions at international venues including The New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall, England; Whitworth Gallery, University of Manchester, England; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada; K20, Dusseldorf, Germany; and Gothenburg Konsthall, Sweden. He has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions at venues including the Solomon R. In 2017 Idris Khan was appointed an OBE for services to Art in the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honors List. His work is in the permanent collections of many institutions worldwide such as The Saatchi Collection, London, England; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Solomon R. Gibson is a member of the Chocktaw and Cherokee nations. He currently lives and works in Hudson, New York. Growing up, Gibson traveled extensively with his family, living for long periods of time in Germany, Korea, and the United States. While moving from place to place, he found solace and friendship in the music scene, at various times exploring the sounds and social traditions of the punk and rave music of his generation, and the PowWow traditions of his native heritage. These influences helped him to contextualize the power of costumes as objects that can transform the wearer, and helped him understand the contemporary desire to be able to take agency over our own identities. Gibson’s multicultural perspective also informed his study of art history, and helped him to develop his personal style. That style has manifested across several dynamic and diverse bodies of work, in which traditional native materials like animal hides, beads, and tipi poles intermingle with modern mediums like spray paint, acrylics, ceramic, and tape. One of his most recognized series involves punching bags that Gibson deftly transforms into aesthetic totems. Another of Gibson’s long running series involves an examination of ceremonial garments. Several of these works were exhibited in a special installation at the entrance to the 2018 New York Armory Show, as well as in the entrance to the 2019 Whitney Biennial. The garments express a range of perspectives and influences, and seem to anticipate inhabitation, like symbols of history and culture that possess both personal and wider social meaning. Major exhibitions of Gibson’s work include Jeffrey Gibson: When Fire is Applied to a Stone It Cracks, Brooklyn Art Museum, New York, NY, USA; Jeffrey Gibson: CAN YOU FEEL IT, Kavi Gupta, Chicago, IL, USA; She Never Dances Alone, Times Square Arts, New York, NY, USA; Jeffrey Gibson: This Is the Day, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX, USA; Wellin Museum of Art, Clinton, NY, USA; Jeffrey Gibson: The Anthropophagic Effect, The New Museum, New York, NY, USA; Jeffrey Gibson: Like a Hammer, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO, USA; and Love Song, ICA, Boston, MA, USA. Gibson is a recipient of numerous awards, notably the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2019); Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Award (2015); and Creative Capital Foundation Grant (2005). Having worked in the tech and design sector after his graduation from the School of Visual Arts, Theodore eventually moved back to New York where his artistic career took off. With roots in graphic design, Theodore’s beginnings as an artist came from adorning the streets of New York City with vibrant, chromatic murals of skeletons depicting contemporary pop culture and fashion “royalty.” Bradley Theodore is known for his colorful depictions of icons. He is a multi-disciplinary artist whose iconoclastic approach to art can be found internationally, from 10-foot murals on the streets of Tokyo, Paris and Milan, to sold-out solo exhibitions in London and NYC. Evoking the universality of color, skeletons, and celebrity, Theodore distils figures to skeletal forms, a confrontation that the artist calls “an act of living”, pushing color to express memory, emotion, and lived experiences. Theodore’s portraits juxtapose the legendary and mortal qualities of modern and contemporary icons and the artist has become a staple in the art and fashion scene in New York City. Theodore has collaborated with popular artists and brands on creative projects for Puma, Moët, Rolls-Royce, Lego, and Moleskine. In 2016, Bradley was the official artist for the US Open, where he created four murals on display at the tournament’s venue; and was the subject of independent film “Becoming: Bradley Theodore”, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. In 2017, Google invited Theodore to their Artist in Residence program (AiR), where he employed the tech giant’s Tilt Brush tool to create art in another dimension. In 2018 for the 50th anniversary of PUMA’s iconic Suede sneaker, Theodore designed a limited edition shoe which was followed by a full collection of sneakers, garments and accessories for the streetwear giant’s Spring Summer 2019 offering. Most recently in 2020 Theodore partnered with LEGO as an official artist for the LEGO Dots campaign, and created a limited edition series of bottles for HAIG Whisky and David Beckham. - [Marina Adams](https://galeriemax.com/artist/marina-adams) - Marina Adams’ (b. 1960) paintings display the artist’s deft use of palette. Fluently pushing color into form, Adams creates undulating, interlocking shapes that reveal a powerful internal rhythm beneath their surface simplicity. As the artist puts it, “Meaning and intellect in abstract art can be difficult to locate, as there is no narrative to lead us into it. It is like the voice itself. I use pattern and color to create the voice. And I use structure and form to channel it.” The artist’s vibrant compositions use saturated shades and sensual shapes to pack a graphic punch. While purely abstract, the works’ organic, free-flowing patterns are redolent of landscapes or bodies. Unlike many contemporary artists, who deliberately blur the line between figuration and abstraction, Adams’ current work is unabashedly—and exuberantly—abstract, allowing the artist to play with sheer color, form and pattern. Her work bears a Matisse-like connection to the intricate patterns of textiles; there is also a resonance with the rich designs of Moroccan rugs—and for that matter, those by Sonia Delaunay. Another inspiration for the artist has been Moorish mosaics, such as the magnificent tessellated walls in the Alhambra palace in Granada. Recent solo exhibitions include Wild Is Its Own Way at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London (UK) in 2021; Deep Breathing at Von Bartha, S-Chanf (CH) in 2021; Tennis Elbow at the Journal Gallery, New York (NY) in 2021; and FOCUS: Marina Adams at The Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth (TX) in 2020. Adams is the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (2016) and the Award of Merit Medal for Painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2018). The artist’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (NY); the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (TX); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (NY); and the Longlati Foundation, Shanghai (CN). - [Ali Banisadr](https://galeriemax.com/artist/ali-banisadr) - Ali Banisadr was born in 1976 in Tehran, Iran. He moved to California with his family when he was a child and later attended the School of Visual Arts, New York, until 2005 and the New York Academy of Art, from which he graduated in 2007. He had his first solo exhibition at Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects in New York in 2008. Banisadr’s work is characterised by dream-like, hallucinatory and often chaotic landscapes. This subject matter is inspired by childhood memories, imaginary scenes, the history of painting and sound. Banisadr has synaesthesia (the ability to experience sound visually). As a young boy during the Iran-Iraq War, Banisadr would draw to create a visual understanding of the sounds of explosions and air raids. These internal noises guide his mark making on the canvas and plate to create layered compositions of disordered forms and figures. - [Georg Baselitz](https://galeriemax.com/artist/georg-baselitz) - Georg Baselitz (born 23 January 1938) is a German painter, sculptor and graphic artist. In the 1960s he became well known for his figurative, expressive paintings. In 1969 he began painting his subjects upside down in an effort to overcome the representational, content-driven character of his earlier work and stress the artifice of painting. Drawing from myriad influences, including art of Soviet era illustration art, the Mannerist period and African sculptures, he developed his own, distinct artistic language. He was born as Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Upper Lusatia, Germany. He grew up amongst the suffering and demolition of World War II, and the concept of destruction plays a significant role in his life and work. These biographical circumstances are recurring aspects of his entire oeuvre. In this context, the artist stated in an interview: “I was born into a destroyed order, a destroyed landscape, a destroyed people, a destroyed society. And I didn’t want to reestablish an order: I had seen enough of so-called order. I was forced to question everything, to be ‘naive’, to start again.” By disrupting any given orders and breaking the common conventions of perception, Baselitz has formed his personal circumstances into his guiding artistic principles. To this day, he still inverts all his paintings, which has become the unique and most defining feature of his work. - [Elizabeth Peyton](https://galeriemax.com/artist/elizabeth-peyton) - Elizabeth Joy Peyton (born 1965) is an American contemporary artist working primarily in painting, drawing, and printmaking. Best known for figures from her own life and those beyond it, including close friends, historical personae, and icons of contemporary culture, Peyton’s portraits have regularly featured artists, writers, musicians, and actors. - [Toba Khedoori](https://galeriemax.com/artist/toba-khedoori) - Toba Khedoori is known for her precisely rendered, intricate works depicting familiar objects divorced from any background. For the past two decades, she has created her own atlas of solitary spaces, windows, doors, train compartments, and horizon lines always devoid of a human presence. Usually drawn, and sometimes painted, onto paper, the otherwise empty compositions envelop the viewer’s entire field of vision, but their proportion appears autonomous from a real-life referent. The works appear at once fragile and monumental, flat and illusory. Born in 1964 in Sydney, Khedoori received her M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1994. - [Joel Mesler](https://galeriemax.com/artist/joel-mesler) - Joel Mesler’s graphic paintings are instantly accessible, combining verdant flora, snakes, and short phrases that are sometimes feel-good (“you deserve great things”) and sometimes off-kilter (“mama said knock you out”). Popular series include his paintings of letters that, when gathered together, form a zany abecedarium —and which sell for six-figure sums. An MFA graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Mesler worked for almost two decades as an art dealer in Los Angeles and New York City. He painted on and off while promoting artists like Henry Taylor and Rashid Johnson early in their careers. In 2017, Mesler moved to Sag Harbor, where he owns Rental Gallery and continues to paint, influenced by pop culture and nature as well as his own history of addiction. - [Shara Hughes](https://galeriemax.com/artist/shara-hughes) - A bright, exuberant palette defines Shara Hughes’s painting practice, which ranges from kaleidoscopic landscapes to intricately detailed interior scenes. The Atlanta-born, Brooklyn-based artist employs oil, enamel, acrylic, and spray paint to produce her impressionistic, multi-textured canvases. Hughes was an artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and has exhibited at galleries in New York, London, Beijing, and Chicago. She has shown at museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Newport Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. In 2017, she participated in the Whitney Biennial, and her work often fetches six figures at auction. Hughes has stated that her neon-hued alien landscapes are the result of an intentional move away from symbolism and narrative. Instead, she favors the open-ended nature of invented worlds. - [Rafa Macarrón](https://galeriemax.com/artist/rafa-macarron) - Rafa Macarrón is a self-taught artist whose works meld playful drawing and figuration with striking, chromatic abstraction. Macarrón’s work plays with bodies, particularly ones with manifold fingers, thin-lined limbs, and hyper-distorted facial features. Trained as a physiotherapist, he works with a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, only to rebuke its precision. His canvases comprise a field of playfulness, a space for mutation. Macarrón’s corruptions of scientific anatomy are at once spirited and macabre, similar to the figures in Picasso’s Guernica. His dreamlike aesthetic brings a popular-cultural sensibility–one informed by various media such as comics and cartoons–to a style of abstract figuration exemplified by painters such as Paul Klee, Arshile Gorky, and Jean Dubuffet. These characters exist in two types of landscapes: in some works, Macarrón emphasizes a sense of isolation, positioning the figures in textured color fields; and in other works, he makes them bustle in overcrowded worlds filled with absurdist infrastructures. - [Miles Aldridge](https://galeriemax.com/artist/miles-aldridge) - Miles Aldridge rose to prominence in the mid-nineties with his arresting, highly stylized photographs with references to film noir, art history and pop culture. An acclaimed colourist, he renders elaborate mise-en-scènes in a palette of vibrant acidic hues. These glamorous, frequently eroticised images probe society’s idealized notions of domestic bliss where sinister undercurrents swirl beneath a flawless surface. Aldridge has worked prolifically for more than twenty-five years, and today he remains one of the few photographers still shooting predominately on film. His creative output encompasses large-scale c-type prints, Polaroids, screenprints, photogravures and drawings. – Susanna Brown - [Rachel Whiteread](https://galeriemax.com/artist/rachel-whiteread) - [Clare Woods](https://galeriemax.com/artist/clare-woods) - Clare Woods RA is a British artist who lives and works in Hereford in the Welsh borders in the UK. Originally trained as a sculptor, Woods career as a painter spans 30 years. Painting initially with gloss paint, the artist now works predominantly with oil based paint on aluminium, and creates smaller works on paper - [Tracey Emin](https://galeriemax.com/artist/tracey-emin) - Tracey Emin is a British artist known for her poignant works that mine autobiographical details through a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, video, sculpture, and neon text. She is a prominent member of the Young British Artists who rose to fame in the late 1980s. Emin’s seminal works Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995 (1995) and My Bed (1998)—her own unmade, messy bed installed at the Tate Gallery—provocatively contributed to feminist discourse with the raw, confessional nature of her art. There should be something revelatory about art,” she reflected. “It should be totally creative and open doors for new thoughts and experiences.” Born on July 3, 1963 in Croydon, United Kingdom, she cites Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele as early inspirations for her expressive style of self-representation. Emin went on to received her MA from the Royal College of Art in London, where she is now a Royal Academician and Honorary Doctorate. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999, and was awarded a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2013. Emin currently lives and works in London, United Kingdom. The artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Goetz Collection in Munich, among others. - [Lubaina Himid](https://galeriemax.com/artist/lubaina-himid) - Lubaina Himid made history in 2017, at age 63, when she became the first Black woman and the oldest artist yet to win the prestigious Turner Prize. As a seminal artist and curator who rose to prominence during the British Black Arts Movement in the 1980s, Himid made it her mission to foreground the neglected histories of Black people. - [Jenny Holzer](https://galeriemax.com/artist/jenny-holzer) - Jenny Holzer is an American Conceptual artist best known for her text-based public art projects. Exploring how language is used both as a form of communication and as a means of concealment and control, Holzer has employed a variety of media throughout her career, including large-scale projections, LED displays, T-shirts, and posters. “I used language because I wanted to offer content that people—not necessarily art people—could understand,” she explained. Born on July 29, 1950 in Gallipolis, OH, Holzer received her BFA from Ohio University in 1972 and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975. Her popular series Truisms began in 1977, when she started pasting ambiguous quotes such as “ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE” and “PROTECT ME FROM WHAT I WANT” throughout New York, while enrolled in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, among others. in 1990 Holzer was the first woman to represent the United States in the Venice Biennale She currently lives and works in Hoosick Falls, NY. - [Austin Lee](https://galeriemax.com/artist/austin-lee) - Using both analog and digital processes, Austin Lee blends abstraction and figuration, humor and pathos, in exuberant paintings and sculptures that evoke the early internet. He initially mocks up many of his canvases using virtual reality modeling software (an update from Photoshop, which he used earlier in his career) and 3D prints many of his sculptures in bronze and plastic. Lee then recreates a distinctly digital aesthetic with airbrush and paintbrush. Working at small and large scales, the artist saturates his work with glowing, electric hues. Humans, animals, and hybrid creatures are frequent motifs, and Lee understands his compositions and hand-painted structures as animated representations of his own feelings. He studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia before receiving his MFA from Yale in 2013. Since then, he has exhibited in New York, Stockholm, London, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, among other cities. - [Jane Hammond](https://galeriemax.com/artist/jane-hammond) - In her paintings and photographic prints, Jane Hammond organizes found image fragments into surreal juxtapositions, foraging flea markets, used bookstores, and antique shops for inspiration. Hammond’s densely literary paintings, which she intends to make “as complicated, inconsistent, varied, multifaceted as you are, as I am, as life is,” as she has said, include images of props such as masks of Einstein and King Tut, and puppet parts. During Hammond’s nine-year collaboration with the poet John Ashbery, he suggested titles for her paintings, including “A Parliament of Refrigerator Magnets,” “Do Husbands Matter?” and “The Wonderfulness of Downtown,” which served as the starting point for her compositions. Hammond also produces black-and-white photomontages that draw on elements of Russian Constructivism and Dada, which she reworks digitally, collaging, retouching, and developing shadow and tone before converting the digital file into a negative and printing the resulting image in the darkroom as a gelatin silver photograph. - [Katherine Bernhardt](https://galeriemax.com/artist/katherine-bernhardt) - In bright, expressive paintings of pop culture characters, food, and consumer goods, Katherine Bernhardt explores the mundane iconography of contemporary society. The artist riffs on similar patterns or motifs across a number of canvases; E.T., the Pink Panther, shoes, and tropical fruits have been common refrains. Bernhardt often outlines her rough-hewn forms and situates them within flat fields of neon color. Her distinctive painting style finds the connective tissue between graffiti, color fields, and action painting. Bernhardt received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and has exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Brussels, Los Angeles, Paris, Stockholm, and beyond. Her work belongs in the collections of the High Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Rubell Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, among others. - [Hilary Pecis](https://galeriemax.com/artist/hilary-pecis) - Hilary Pecis’s vibrant still lifes and landscape paintings feature tranquil domestic settings, textural floral arrangements, and references to the art historical canon. Her exquisitely detailed paintings exude a sense of casual comfort: With a soft, naturalistic palette, Pecis fills her tableaux with crowded tables, house plants, and hefty art books. The California-based artist has exhibited in New York, London, Tokyo, Beijing, Los Angeles, and beyond. She is also the co-founder of the Binder of Women, a collective of female artists based in the Los Angeles area. “I find that there is a lot of freedom within the parameters of the still life,” Pecis told Artsy. “It is a place to start, but there are infinite possibilities.” - [Tunji Adeniyi-Jones](https://galeriemax.com/artist/tunji-adeniyi-jones) - With vibrant swirls of color and an eye towards West African aesthetics, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones paints Black bodies in repose and lush, mystical flora and fauna. The U.K.-born, New York–based artist draws on both his Yoruba heritage and diasporic experiences to inform his beguiling canvases, where he honors his ancestors’ ceremonies and celebrations. Adeniyi-Jones received his MFA from Yale and has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Stockholm, and London. His work regularly sells for six figures on the secondary market. Adeniyi-Jones believes that his portrayals of the body can transcend linguistic barriers and present a common language of movement and intimacy. - [McArthur Binion](https://galeriemax.com/artist/mcarthur-binion) - McArthur Binion is an African-American artist known for his mixed-media abstract paintings. Probing both Minimalism and personal identity, Binion employs grids, hand-drawn lines, and photocopied versions of his birth certificate to create his works. “The part I took from Minimalism is that you want to do your own stuff in your own image,” he has said. Born in 1946 in Macon, MS, he and his family movedto Detroit in 1951. Binion received his BFA from Wayne State University and his MFA from the Cranbook Academy of Art in 1973, before moving to New York. Influenced by Piet Mondrian as well as his contemporaries Brice Marden and Sol Lewitt, Binion became an integral part of the downtown scene before he moved to Chicago in 1991. The artist builds her kaleidoscopic canvases through a bricolage of painting, printmaking, sewn textiles, and collaged cutouts; as she integrates craft elements into her paintings, she explores cultural perceptions and depictions of Black femininity. Self studied at Bard College before receiving her MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale. While those media remain the core of her practice, Self makes sculptures and installations as well. She has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Naples, Brussels, and San Francisco, and her work belongs in the collections of the Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo, the HOW Art Museum in Shanghai, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the LUMA Foundation, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. Sikander currently lives and works in New York City. - [El Anatsui](https://galeriemax.com/artist/el-anatsui) - In his sculptures and installations, El Anatsui transforms simple, everyday objects into grand, totemic assemblages. He combines such disparate materials as bottle caps, printing plates, cassava graters, copper wiring, and sheet metal into both floor-based sculptures and shimmering wall pieces that sway and flex like cloth, despite their rigid composite materials. In transforming discarded objects into large-scale artworks, Ghanaian-born Anatsui explores the effects of human consumption on the environment and the fraught material and ideological relations between Africa and the Western world at large. Anatsui has exhibited in New York, London, Lagos, Barcelona, and Doha. He has participated in the Venice Biennale twice, once in 1990 and again in 2007, and received a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2009. His work has achieved seven figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of African Art, and the British Museum, among others. - [Raymond Pettibon](https://galeriemax.com/artist/raymond-pettibon) - Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There’s a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn’t abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Hunter College. His work is often composed of found objects from his neighborhood, and “address issues related to consumer culture, poverty, and race”. - [Pam Evelyn](https://galeriemax.com/artist/pam-evelyn) - Evelyn’s intuitive approach to painting translates her lived experience in the world onto the canvas, creating complex and vivacious compositions that brim with life. Her charged use of oil paints—carefully layered, scraped, and rearticulated over several months—recalls the seething vitality of Abstract Expressionist painters while retaining a distinct and contemporary quality. Made over long periods of time, Evelyn’s paintings move through countless iterations as she builds up and pares back her gestures in a dynamic tension between destruction and resolution, freedom and control, collapse and resurrection. The works appear like living, breathing canvases as the complexity of texture and temporality encased in the oil paint drips and sweats, obscures and reveals in turn. Indeed, Evelyn speaks of her paintings as quasi-sentient beings, positioning herself as their audience rather than creator as she allows them to dictate their direction. - [Richard Diebenkorn](https://galeriemax.com/artist/richard-diebenkorn) - Richard Diebenkorn was an American painter and printmaker. His early work is associated with abstract expressionism and the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In the late 1960s, he began his extensive series of geometric, lyrical abstract paintings. - [Tomokazu Matsuyama](https://galeriemax.com/artist/tomokazu-matsuyama) - Eastern and Western art history and pop culture collide in Tomokazu Matsuyama’s fantastical paintings, which explore themes of globalization and national identity in the age of the internet. The artist, who grew up between Japan and America, loads his large-scale canvases (sometimes irregularly shaped or divided into panels) with references to his bicultural background: He has taken inspiration from Pop art and manga, cowboys and samurai, graffiti and the Meiji era, Abstract Expressionism and woodblock printing. Matsuyama imbues his energetic scenes with a playful, high-octane color palette. The compositions often blur the boundaries between domestic interiors and the natural world. Matsuyama received his MFA from Pratt Institute in 2004. Since then, he has exhibited in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, among other cities. Matsuyama has completed a number of public art commissions, producing towering sculptures and murals around the world. ## Exhibitions - [It's not Just Steak & Kidney Pie...](https://galeriemax.com/exhibition/its-not-just-steak-kidney-pie) - Opening June 26th – July 27th, “Not Just Steak & Kidney Pie!” features a comprehensive collection of original works by important Contemporary British Artists, with brand new projects by four of the original YBA’s (Young British Artists) including: Peter Doig, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, and Grayson Perry. These artists, graduates of Goldsmith’s college in London in the late 1980’s, used shock tactics, with bold new techniques and imagery that turned the art world upside down. They created a “we can do anything” attitude, and it worked! As these artist’s continue to thrive and reinvent themselves, their success paved the way for an expansion of Contemporary British Art, also included in this exhibition such as Michael Craig-Martin (once a professor at Goldsmith’s College), Anish Kapoor, Harland Miller, Sarah Morris and Julian Opie. - [Interrupting Nature](https://galeriemax.com/exhibition/interrupting-nature) - Opening June 26th – July 19th, Interrupting Nature will include works by Jason Middlebrook, Cecily Brown, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Chris Ofili, Cy Twombly and Jonas Wood. It will be the second show at Galerie Maximillian for featured artist Jason Middlebrook. He gathers his creative inspiration from both nature and technology, transferring their complex relationship into sculptures, installations, mosaics, paintings and drawings. The show’s title is derived from his desire to emphasize the tense relationship humans often with nature and art. The new Middlebrook collection will include realistic mushrooms, tree stump sculptures, two prized planks of wood and bench all inlaid with gleaming mosaics and/or broken glass. Damien Hirst and the other esteemed artists in the show will each bring their own, unique interpretation of the natural world. - [65 Modern and Contemporary Prints](https://galeriemax.com/exhibition/65-modern-and-contemporary-prints) - [Grayson Perry - Animal Spirits](https://galeriemax.com/exhibition/grayson-perry-animal-spirits)
