Shara Hughes

[b. 1981 - ] View All Work

A bright, exuberant palette defines Shara Hughes’s painting practice, which ranges from kaleidoscopic landscapes to intricately detailed interior scenes. The Atlanta-born, Brooklyn-based artist employs oil, enamel, acrylic, and spray paint to produce her impressionistic, multi-textured canvases. Hughes was an artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and has exhibited at galleries in New York, London, Beijing, and Chicago. She has shown at museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Newport Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. In 2017, she participated in the Whitney Biennial, and her work often fetches six figures at auction. Hughes has stated that her neon-hued alien landscapes are the result of an intentional move away from symbolism and narrative. Instead, she favors the open-ended nature of invented worlds.
