Eye Candy: Prints by Wayne Thiebaud and Others

Galerie Maximillian invites you to the opening reception of Eye Candy, an exhibition featuring the early work of Wayne Thiebaud and a selection of important modern and contemporary artists.  The opening reception on December 27th, 2015 from 6-8 pm, includes Thiebaud’s iconic candy apples, chocolate cake and lemon meringue pie.  Additional delights include vibrant, textural monoprints by Mel Bochner; iconic spot & butterfly projects by Damien Hirst; Anish Kapoor’s colorful and seductive engravings; including his first sculptural project on paper entitled “Folds” and the lush, layered, imagery of the Brazilian superstar Beatriz Milhazes who is having her first major US retrospective at the Perez Museum (PAMM) in Miami, FL through January 11, 2015.  The show will also include works by internationally renowned artists: Donald Baechler, Chuck Close, John Chamberlain, Roy Lichtenstein, Takashi Murakami, Michael Craig-Martin, Yoshitoma Nara and Tom Wesselmann.  The show will continue through March, 2015.

Thiebaud, an artist we have long admired but have not had the opportunity to show, (until now) has been a prominent presence on the Californian art scene, first working as a commercial artist for Disney and Rexall Drugs and transitioning to a successful career as a fine artist following WWII.  His “genre” of cake counters; gumball machines, pie slices, lollypops and ice cream cones are a simple foray into his complex exploration of shapes, shadows, perspective and textural realism. He became fascinated by the difficulty of drawing light distorted through glass or volume on a flat surface.  His gumball machines and candy dishes along with soft, billowy meringues and frostings on pies and cakes became a means to explore these technical challenges.

Also included in this show is a selection of larger, color street scenes depicting San Francisco.  These soaring hills exaggerate the height and perspective that typify this part of northern California.   Similar motivations exist for the artist – exploration of color, light, shapes, shadows and perspective, these street scenes capture his rare ability to perfectly combine brilliant draftsmanship and dazzling color.

Our entire exhibition features over 25 works the gallery has been slowly acquiring over the past couple of years.   Beautifully drawn and perfectly colored, these charming, delightful prints can only be described as pure joy.  Visit Galerie Maximillian in downtown Aspen at 602 E. Cooper Avenue, and view Eye Candy in person through March, 2015.
